Banana Split Shakes

Creamy banana-vanilla milkshakes striped with fresh strawberry sauce and chocolate, then finished with whipped cream, nuts, and cherries.

Prep Time:15 minCook Time:10 minTotal Time:25 minServings:4Difficulty:Easy

This milkshake keeps the full banana split idea in a glass without becoming too thick to drink. Ripe banana and vanilla ice cream form the base, while separate strawberry and chocolate ribbons preserve the familiar sundae flavors instead of blending them into one indistinct sweetness.

A quick strawberry sauce gives the shake brighter fruit flavor than bottled syrup. Simmer it only until glossy and spoonable, then cool it before assembly so the milkshakes stay properly frozen.

Chill the glasses while preparing the toppings and blend the shakes at the last moment. Start with the smaller amount of milk, adding only enough to keep the blender moving; this produces a creamy pour that still travels easily through a wide straw.

The whipped cream, toasted peanuts, and cherry make the soda-fountain reference clear, but the finishing portions stay restrained. Serve immediately, with long spoons for scooping up the sauce and toppings near the bottom of each glass.

Place four tall glasses in the freezer. Combine the strawberries, granulated sugar, and lemon juice in a small saucepan over medium heat.

  2. 2
Glossy strawberry sauce simmering in a saucepan

Cook the strawberries for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring and crushing them, until the sauce is glossy and slightly thickened. Transfer it to a shallow bowl and cool completely.

  3. 3
Chopped chocolate melting with cream into a smooth sauce

Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the 1/4 cup heavy cream until steaming, pour it over the chocolate, and wait 1 minute before stirring until smooth. Let the sauce cool until just warm.

  4. 4
Whipped cream holding soft peaks in a mixing bowl

Whip the cold 1/2 cup heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks hold. Refrigerate it while you blend the shakes.

  5. 5
Bananas and vanilla ice cream blending into a thick milkshake

Blend the frozen bananas, vanilla ice cream, and 3/4 cup of the milk until thick and smooth. Add the remaining milk a little at a time only if needed for a creamy, pourable texture.

  6. 6

Drizzle some strawberry sauce and chocolate sauce down the insides of the chilled glasses. Divide the milkshake among them, then spoon the remaining sauces over the tops.

Finish each shake with whipped cream, chopped peanuts, and a cherry. Serve immediately with wide straws and long spoons.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Strawberries, Hulled and Chopped:1 cup
  • Granulated Sugar:2 tablespoons
  • Fresh Lemon Juice:1 teaspoon
  • Semisweet Chocolate, Finely Chopped:3 ounces
  • Heavy Cream for Chocolate Sauce:1/4 cup
  • Cold Heavy Cream for Whipping:1/2 cup
  • Powdered Sugar:1 tablespoon
  • Vanilla Extract:1/2 teaspoon
  • Ripe Bananas, Sliced and Frozen:3
  • Vanilla Ice Cream:5 cups
  • Cold Whole Milk:1 cup
  • Roasted Unsalted Peanuts, Chopped:1/4 cup
  • Maraschino Cherries:4

Tips & Notes

  • Cool both sauces before they touch the shake; warm sauce melts the ice cream too quickly.
  • Freeze peeled banana slices in a single layer so they blend without large icy clumps.
  • For nut-free shakes, omit the peanuts and add a few chocolate curls for texture.
