Old Fashioned

This Old Fashioned Mocktail is my favorite sober celebration — it keeps everything you love about the classic cocktail: the caramel warmth, the whisper of bitters, and the bright orange oil, without the alcohol. It’s simple, elegant, and the kind of drink you can be proud to serve when you want something grown-up and thoughtful.

I love how a little good non-alcoholic whiskey alternative, fresh orange peel, and a touch of syrup can create the same cozy ritual as the traditional version. Stirred slowly over ice, it’s a tiny ceremony in a glass that’s perfect for evenings in or hosting friends.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz Non-alcoholic whiskey alternative
  • 3 tbsp Simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
  • 3/4 tsp Non-alcoholic aromatic bitters (or regular aromatic bitters if available)
  • 2 tsp Room-temperature water (splash)
  • 4 pieces Large ice cubes
  • 2 pieces Orange peel (for expressing and garnish)
  • 2 pieces Maraschino cherries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Chill two Old Fashioned glasses by filling them with ice and setting them aside while you mix the drink.

  2. In a mixing glass, combine the non-alcoholic whiskey alternative, simple syrup, bitters, and the splash of water.

  3. Add a generous handful of ice to the mixing glass and stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. Discard the ice from the chilled glasses and divide 2 large ice cubes into each glass (4 cubes total).

  5. Strain the stirred mixture evenly into the two glasses over the ice.

  6. Take an orange peel, hold it over a glass, and give it a good twist to express the oils over the surface; rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Garnish each with a maraschino cherry.

  7. Serve immediately and enjoy the balanced, smoky-sweet flavors.

Tips & Notes

  • Use a quality non-alcoholic whiskey alternative for the best depth; if unavailable, strong cold-brew black tea works as a vegetal substitute.
  • Stirring (not shaking) preserves clarity and texture—aim for 20–30 seconds to get the right chill and dilution.
  • If you like a slightly smokier note, add a tiny pinch of smoked salt to the drink or use a smoked cherry for garnish.
