Classic Margarita with Fresh Lime and Salt Rim Cocktail
Classic Margarita
The Classic Margarita is one of those joyous, simple cocktails that feels like sunshine in a glass. With just tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice, it's all about bright citrus, clean agave notes, and a kiss of salt on the rim — utterly refreshing and endlessly drinkable.
I love this version because it's straightforward and reliable: measure, shake, and enjoy. Whether you're winding down after a long day or hosting friends, this recipe gives you a perfectly balanced Margarita every time.
Ingredients
- 4 oz Blanco tequila
- 2 oz Orange liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec)
- 1.5 oz Fresh lime juice
- 1 tbsp Coarse kosher salt (for rim)
- 1.5 cups Ice
- 2 pieces Lime wedges (for garnish and rimming)
- 0.5 oz Optional: agave syrup
Instructions
-
Pour the coarse salt onto a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of two rocks glasses, then dip the rims into the salt to coat. Set glasses aside.
-
Fill a cocktail shaker with the ice. Add the tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. If you like a slightly sweeter Margarita, add the optional agave syrup.
-
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels cold and frosty.
-
Fill the prepared glasses with fresh ice (or leave ice out if you prefer it 'up'). Strain the shaken cocktail evenly into the glasses.
-
Garnish each drink with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim, give it a gentle stir if needed, and serve immediately.
-
Sip slowly and enjoy — a well-made Margarita is all about balance, so taste and adjust sweetness next time if you prefer it brighter or softer.
Tips & Notes
- Always use freshly squeezed lime juice — bottled juice will taste flat.
- If your tequila is very harsh, a touch of agave syrup (about 1/2 oz) softens the edges without hiding the flavors.
- For a smoother texture, shake long enough to properly chill and dilute the drink; that tiny bit of water makes a big difference.
- Try salting half the rim for a lighter salty hit if you or your guests prefer less salt.
